Watercraft Courses

The Training Centre runs a number of courses to help club members as well as the general public gain skills essential for the safe and efficient use water craft. These courses cover:

RIB Induction

This program is for:

All members who wish to operate any of the Rigid Inflatable Boats owned by the club for the coming season. Active participation in a RIB Induction session is required by all Sailing Instructors, Assistant Instructors (who operate RIBs) and powerboat volunteers prior to using RIBs for the coming season.

Please note that Sailing Committee approval is also required to be able to drive club boats.

What you will learn:

You will receive an update on all new RIB equipment and procedures including set up, launching, retrieval and storage.

The prerequisites:

The participant must be a full member of the McCrae Yacht Club

The participant must hold a current powerboat licence.

Program duration:

1 hour session.

Cost to participate:

No cost

Power Boat Handling Certificate

This program is for:

All who wish to safely operate a rescue boat. The Sailing Committee strongly recommends this course for all members assisting with club racing and training activities. This includes volunteers operating club rescue boats and potential Sailing Instructors (mandatory for Instructor accreditation with Yachting Australia).

What you will learn:

This course covers basic powerboat handling and maintenance, the government boating regulations, right-of-way rules, buoyage systems and elementary chart work. The course is highly practical and successful participation provides the participant with the documentation necessary to obtain a VicRoads Powerboat Operators License.

The prerequisites:

Participants must be at least 12 years old.

This is an introductory course so there are no pre-requisites.

This course is open to the public.

Program duration:

The Course is run over 3 days and includes one full day Theory session and two practical on-water sessions.

Cost to participate:

$350 for McCrae Yacht Club members.

$475 for all others.

Safety (Rescue) Boat Handling Certificate

This program is for:

Individuals who already have their Powerboat Handling Certificate with the aim of further developing their skills of navigation and rescue.

This Certificate is also a requirement for Yachting Australia Club Coach Accreditation.

What you will learn

1. Rules and Regulations for Safety Boat Operation

2. Plan and prepare for Safety Boat Operations

3. Manoeuvre a Vessel in Safety Boat Operations

4. Apply Safety Management during Safety Boat Operations

5. Search and rescue techniques for Safety Boat Operation.

The prerequisites:

A Recreational Powerboat Licence

Experience in operating a powerboat

Powerboat Handling Certificate

This course is open to the public

Program duration:

Two full day sessions and one evening session.

Cost to participate:

$300 for McCrae Yacht Club members.

$355 for all others.
